Marvellous to have Khaikin & Ivanov here: always hard to find these old Soviet conductors leading the band. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteWill upload the Glazounov files (inc Khaikin). Tchaik Sym 1 has couple of Ivanov Liadov fillers (ASD2801 has Svetlanov's ++++). The 'missing' Glinka tracks may appear, as 2 other 1968 recordings appeared on Tchaik ASD's - and more on a 1986 CdM LP which includes Glinka's Symphony.
DeleteThank you. Great to hear these performances again, used to regularly borrow the R-K box from from local library.
ReplyDeleteStrangely got a poor review in the 1982 Penguin Guide. The 3rd Sym sounds a bit more 'airy' in the previous ASD - spreads onto a second side (with the PC/Zhukov - but that is better as a later ASD..decisions, decisions..). My favourite tends to be the maligned 1st Sym. Some of the Maxim Shostakovich items are interesting - though never warmed to various Sadko performances...
DeleteWonderful! I recall the Svetlanov performances were scattered as fill-ups, and I don't think either May Night or Ivan the Terrible appeared on CD. My LP with them is now suffering from age. You've done magnificent work on all these, one of your best posts I think. I'm very grateful.
ReplyDeleteHello Andrew.. Sadly am missing an LP-ish of later Svetlanov ASD R-K(May Night-ov was reissued) but ASD prices, late '70's, must've diminished sales of the Melodiya series; especially set-against 'sonically preferable' Philadelphia/Chicago ASD's.
DeleteIf it weren't for the editing-time - I'd prefer to do 'compendium's' like this - and the forthcoming Glazounov's..
Outstanding audio quality! Pre-digital analog - excellent job of restoration. Thank you
ReplyDeleteI have always enjoyed Melodiya performances - slightly cutting sound but what performances!
ReplyDeleteParticularly, May Night brings back to me my excitement as a teenager - All praise to the Music Parlour time machine!
Please do bring back the Rozhdestvensky and his other recordings.
...but "Ivan The Terrible" has fabulous Brass outburts!
DeleteDo intend more Rozhdestvensky:- the Taneiev Sym.4 mentioned here (Melodiya: oddly have CM02175/6 which contains the Spendiarov fillups on the ASD + the 2 Glazounov's on ASD Rachlin/Sym.4.
Prokofiev - Chout is on ASD2763 (c/w M.Shost: Age of Gold) + ASD2463 has Pas d'Acier (c/w Sym.2) + few more extras.
Been too cold for transfers + the aged 24/96 computer has reverted to USB 1 speed: a major problem as hesitate to install Windows 2000 over 98SE to get USB 2 back (the properly supported systems for Terratec's DMX-6fire card/breakout box...).
